About CBowden's Valley Dog School

The Valleys premier dog school, dedicated to transforming dogs' lives through professional training, structure, and owner education.

Our Story

CBowden’s Valley Dog School was founded in 2015 with a simple mission: to help dogs and their owners build stronger, more trusting relationships through professional training, structure, clear communication, and behavioral guidance. What started as a favor for a friend quickly grew into a trusted dog training business serving families throughout the Shenandoah Valley and surrounding areas. Since opening, CBowden’s Valley Dog School has helped hundreds, if not thousands, of dogs and families achieve their training goals, build better communication, and create more reliable results at home. At CBowden’s Valley Dog School, we believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to dog training. Every dog is different. Each dog comes with their own personality, learning style, temperament, history, and individual needs. Because of that, our programs are designed to be personalized, practical, and realistic for both the dog and the family. Whether we are working with a young puppy just beginning their training journey, a family dog who needs better manners, or a dog struggling with more serious behavior concerns, our goal is always to create clear communication, build confidence, and help each dog become a more reliable and enjoyable companion. We are a small, home-based training facility with a strong focus on safety, structure, cleanliness, professionalism, and individual care. Unlike large commercial kennels, we only work with a limited number of dogs at a time so each student and guest receives the time, attention, and consistency they deserve. Our training building is located right next to our family home and is equipped with cameras, alarms, and carefully maintained cleaning protocols. We take pride in creating a safe, calm, and comfortable environment for every dog in our care, and we regularly receive compliments on how clean and well-kept our facility is. We offer a hybrid approach to boarding and training. Our facility includes safe kennel stalls for students and guests, along with crates for dogs who are still crate training or benefit from that added structure. Each dog has their own dedicated space, access to fresh water, and carefully stored belongings in airtight storage areas. Dogs are let out regularly throughout the day into one of our fully fenced yards. We have a smaller turf yard with six-foot fencing and a larger fenced yard for training, play, and structured time outside. Every dog is supervised any time they leave their kennel space. Our facility is also equipped with a commercial grooming tub, refrigerator for cold food or medications, washer and dryer for keeping bedding clean, and a calm environment with music playing throughout the day. Because real life does not happen in a kennel or training yard alone, our training dogs are also regularly brought into our home. This allows them to practice obedience, manners, impulse control, and calm behavior in an environment that feels much more like the home they will return to with their families. Coming in late 2026, we are excited to add an agility play yard for training students and guests. This space will be used for enrichment, confidence building, body awareness, and fun structured activities. Today, CBowden’s Valley Dog School continues to help dogs and families build better relationships through training that is practical, personalized, and designed for real life. Our mission has always remained the same: to help dogs become more confident, reliable, and enjoyable companions while giving their families the education, support, and tools they need to maintain that progress at home.

Meet Carly Bowden

Founder and Lead Trainer at CBowden’s Valley Dog School Carly Bowden is the owner and lead trainer behind CBowden’s Valley Dog School. Her life and career have always revolved around dogs. Carly has had a passion for animals since childhood. She always knew she wanted to work with animals, and that dream became a reality when she entered the dog care industry in 2007. She began as a kennel attendant at a boarding facility, where she also had the opportunity to shadow a professional groomer for a year. In 2009, Carly accepted a position at a local boarding and training facility after the first facility moved locations. That opportunity became a major turning point in her career and opened the door to professional dog training. While working there, Carly had the invaluable opportunity to apprentice under two experienced, well-established dog trainers. She spent years observing lessons, assisting with training dogs, helping oversee progress, and learning how to support both dogs and their families through the training process. Before taking on her own clients, Carly gained hands-on experience in private lessons and board and train programs for family pets, and occasionally sport dogs. This gave her the chance to work with many different breeds, temperaments, learning styles, and behavioral challenges in a real training environment. Around 2012, Carly became the head trainer at the facility. After her mentors retired, she eventually moved on and began training from home. That decision later grew into what is now CBowden’s Valley Dog School. With nearly two decades of hands-on experience, Carly has worked with thousands of dogs throughout her career. Since opening CBowden’s Valley Dog School in 2015, she has helped hundreds, if not thousands, of dogs and families throughout the Shenandoah Valley and surrounding areas. Carly has titled her personal dogs, explored several dog sports, attended seminars and workshops, and continues to build her knowledge through real-world experience and continuing education. While she values education, she also believes some of the most important lessons come from years of daily hands-on work with dogs and their people. As a trainer, Carly is not bound by one single tool, technique, or training philosophy. She is open-minded, communicative, and committed to using practical, fair, and effective training methods to achieve the best possible results for each dog and handler team. Whether the goal is raising a well-mannered puppy, creating a more reliable house pet, improving obedience, building confidence, or addressing serious behavior concerns, Carly tailors her approach to fit the individual dog’s needs. Her greatest passion has always been helping everyday families gain a better relationship with their dogs. She enjoys helping dogs earn more freedom and trust through clear communication, structure, reliable obedience, and owner education. Over the years, Carly has also helped rescue organizations in Northern Virginia by training misunderstood dogs and helping educate adopters so those dogs could transition more successfully into their new homes. Carly’s path may not have been built through letters after her name, but through mentorship, daily hands-on experience, continuing education, and a deep commitment to helping both dogs and their people. She is forever grateful for the professionals who mentored her and helped shape her into the trainer she is today. For Carly, this is not just a job. It is the only work she has ever known, and the work she always knew she was meant to do.

Our Training Philosophy

At CBowden’s Valley Dog School, we believe every dog deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential. We also understand that dogs, just like people, have different personalities, learning styles, motivations, sensitivities, and needs. Because of that, we do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to training. Our training philosophy is flexible, open-minded, fair, and focused on creating clear communication between dogs and their handlers. We use a modern balanced training approach inspired by NePoPo®, which combines the benefits of positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement to help dogs learn with clarity, confidence, motivation, and reliability. NePoPo® stands for Negative, Positive, Positive. In simple terms, this means mild, controlled pressure may be used to help guide the dog, the pressure is released when the dog responds correctly, and the dog is then rewarded with something they value. This helps the dog clearly understand what is being asked while also keeping them motivated and engaged in the learning process. Our goal is never to create fear or force. Our goal is to create clarity, confidence, motivation, and reliable behavior in real-life situations. We want dogs to understand how to be successful and enjoy working with their handler. We are open to using training tools when they can help improve communication, safety, consistency, and understanding. These tools may include electronic collars, specifically E-Collar Technologies collars, other training collars, leashes, long lines, clickers, food, treats, toys, praise, and anything your dog values that can help motivate and shape behavior. Training tools are exactly that: tools. They are used as part of the learning process, not as a replacement for training. When introduced and used properly, they can help create clearer communication between the dog and handler. As consistency and reliability are built over time, the goal is often to reduce reliance on certain tools while maintaining the dog’s understanding and behavior. Owner education is just as important as training the dog. We take time to explain what tools are being used, why they are being used, and how to use them properly. Families need to understand not only what their dog has learned, but how to continue reinforcing those skills at home. Whether we are working on puppy foundations, basic obedience, off-leash reliability, confidence building, or behavior modification, we tailor our approach to fit the individual dog and the goals of their family. Some dogs need more motivation. Some need more structure. Some need help building confidence. Others need clearer boundaries and better communication. Our job is to recognize what each dog needs and build a training plan that is fair, practical, and effective. At CBowden’s Valley Dog School, we want dogs to remain engaged, motivated, and eager to learn. We believe training should be fair, structured, practical, and designed for real life. Our goal is not just to train your dog, but to strengthen the relationship between you and your dog so you can enjoy more freedom, trust, and confidence together. We are committed to your dog’s long-term success. Training does not end when a program is complete. Through owner education, transfer lessons, and continued support, we help families maintain and build on the progress their dog has made so those results can last well beyond their time with us.

Serving the Shenandoah Valley

Located just a few miles outside of Strasburg, Virginia, CBowden’s Valley Dog School proudly serves dog owners throughout the northern Shenandoah Valley and surrounding areas.

Our facility is tucked away in a peaceful, private setting with a quiet country feel, allowing dogs to learn in a calm and structured environment. While our property offers privacy, it is still an active, real-life setting with family, staff, clients, and business activity happening throughout the day. This gives dogs valuable opportunities to practice manners, obedience, and calm behavior around everyday movement.

We also understand that training needs to transfer beyond our property. Dogs enrolled in our 3 and 4 week Board & Train programs may participate in field trips to busier public environments, helping them generalize their skills around new sights, sounds, people, and distractions.

Whether you are local to the Shenandoah Valley or willing to travel for the right training fit, we would love the opportunity to help your dog succeed.
