Our Training Philosophy

At CBowden’s Valley Dog School, we believe every dog deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential. We also understand that dogs, just like people, have different personalities, learning styles, motivations, sensitivities, and needs. Because of that, we do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to training.

Our training philosophy is flexible, open-minded, fair, and focused on creating clear communication between dogs and their handlers. We use a modern balanced training approach inspired by NePoPo®, which combines the benefits of positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement to help dogs learn with clarity, confidence, motivation, and reliability.

NePoPo® stands for Negative, Positive, Positive. In simple terms, this means mild, controlled pressure may be used to help guide the dog, the pressure is released when the dog responds correctly, and the dog is then rewarded with something they value. This helps the dog clearly understand what is being asked while also keeping them motivated and engaged in the learning process.

Our goal is never to create fear or force. Our goal is to create clarity, confidence, motivation, and reliable behavior in real-life situations. We want dogs to understand how to be successful and enjoy working with their handler.

We are open to using training tools when they can help improve communication, safety, consistency, and understanding. These tools may include electronic collars, specifically E-Collar Technologies collars, other training collars, leashes, long lines, clickers, food, treats, toys, praise, and anything your dog values that can help motivate and shape behavior.

Training tools are exactly that: tools. They are used as part of the learning process, not as a replacement for training. When introduced and used properly, they can help create clearer communication between the dog and handler. As consistency and reliability are built over time, the goal is often to reduce reliance on certain tools while maintaining the dog’s understanding and behavior.

Owner education is just as important as training the dog. We take time to explain what tools are being used, why they are being used, and how to use them properly. Families need to understand not only what their dog has learned, but how to continue reinforcing those skills at home.

Whether we are working on puppy foundations, basic obedience, off-leash reliability, confidence building, or behavior modification, we tailor our approach to fit the individual dog and the goals of their family. Some dogs need more motivation. Some need more structure. Some need help building confidence. Others need clearer boundaries and better communication. Our job is to recognize what each dog needs and build a training plan that is fair, practical, and effective.

At CBowden’s Valley Dog School, we want dogs to remain engaged, motivated, and eager to learn. We believe training should be fair, structured, practical, and designed for real life. Our goal is not just to train your dog, but to strengthen the relationship between you and your dog so you can enjoy more freedom, trust, and confidence together.

We are committed to your dog’s long-term success. Training does not end when a program is complete. Through owner education, transfer lessons, and continued support, we help families maintain and build on the progress their dog has made so those results can last well beyond their time with us.
